Ticks-- they are creepy, crawly, nasty little things. Ticks can carry several diseases that can make our pets (and us) very sick.
Did you know that there are 25X more dog cases of Lyme disease than human cases reported to the CDC? Even more worrisome, Adair County is listed as HIGH RISK for two common tick diseases in dogs: Lyme and Ehrlichia. In Adair Co., 1 in 12 dogs test positive for Lyme disease and 1 in 8 dogs test positive for Ehrlichia. And yes, people can also get these diseases from ticks! (You may have heard of Alpha-gal syndrome which is a human allergy to red meat that can be caused by Ehrlichia from a tick bite.)
Lyme disease is transmitted by the deer tick and Ehrlichia by the lone star and black-legged tick. For this reason, monthly flea and tick prevention is the first line of defense; however, ticks can still get on our pets and potentially transmit disease before the tick dies.
These tick dieases may cause fever, lethargy, anemia, bleeding, joint pain/lameness and even death.
Fortunately for dogs, there is a vaccine that can prevent Lyme disease. This is a 2-part vaccine, meaning it requires a booster 2-3 weeks after the initial vaccine.
