Vaccines - Protecting your best friends

Vaccines have saved the lives of many animals.  They are inactivated or altered live disease agents that cause the immune system to produce a protective response specific to that disease.  By vaccinating your pets your are preparing their immune system to prevent disease when the "real" infection strikes.
Below we have listed the most common disease threats that we recommend vaccinating for today:

Canine
    Parvovirus/Coronavirus
   Distemper/Adenovirus/Parinfluenza
   Leptospirosis - ZOONOTIC!!
   Bordetella (Kennel Cough/Canine Cough)
   Lyme Disease
   Rabies
   NEW Vaccine:  Canine Influenza

Feline
    Leukemia
   Feline Immunodeficiency (FIV)
   Panleukopenia
   Feline Calicivirus/Rhinotracheitis
   Chlamyida psittaci
   Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP)
   Rabies

Unfortunately there are many ways for your pet to be exposed to these diseases.  They can be in direct contact with a sick pet, however, healthy appearing animals can spread viruses and bacteria as well.  You could unknowingly carry diseases to your pet on your hands, clothing or shoes.  Diseases can also be spread indirectly.  For instance, a lot of Parvo virus exposure is where a dog has had a bowel movement on a yard and is no longer anywhere around.  Some diseased can live in the environment for months to years.  This is why it is so important to ensure your pet has the optimal protection against such disease and viruses.

You can protect your pet by vaccinating regularly.  Some vaccines protect your pet for a full year while others only for 6 months.  Feel free to ask us about this and other wellness recommendations when you come in for your pets exam.
