Surgery is one of those words that we don't like to say. We either "elect" to have surgery performed on our pets or in some cases we "have" to have it performed due to an emergency. For example: elective or routine surgeries would include spays, neuters, and dental cleanings. Other types of non elective or routine surgery would include Pyometras, Cesarean Sections, Bladder Stones, and Exploratory surgeries.
In any case, you want to know that your pet is in good hands and that everything is being done with the utmost care. As many of you know, we are members of the American Animal Hospital Association. With this accreditation, we uphold the highest standards of care. Surgeries are performed by licensed veterinarians and ONLY in sterile environments.
When having a surgery performed on your pet, we recommend pre-anesthetic blood screens to check the internal organ health, red blood cell count, platelet count, white blood cell count etc.. We do this to ensure that your pet can filter out the anesthesia and there are no pre-existing conditions that may cause complications. If the blood work is normal, we will then move to the next step of placing an IV catheter so we have access to a vein in case of an emergency. If we see a need, we will run IV fluids to help keep your pet hydrated and keep their blood pressure elevated during the procedure. Fluids can also help to filter the anesthesia out of your pets system post surgery.
We monitor our patients extensively during procedures and surgery. We have a technician designated for just this job. Parameters we monitor and document are temperature, pulse or heart rate, heart rhythm, respiratory rate, oxygen saturation and blood pressure. This enables us to use the least anesthesia and ensure the safest surgical environment for you pet.

PAIN CONTROL Pain control is very important and can make a huge difference in the recovery of your pet. Our goal is that your pet is in as little pain as possible. We give each patient a "pain score" that is based on their age, type of surgery and actions post surgery. While every pet will receive pain medications during their stay with us, it is highly recommended that they also have pain medication to use at home for several days. Pain medication can also be anti-inflammatory as well. Studies have shown that pets heal faster when on pain medication. Our goal is to optimize the healing time and process. We feel pain medication is essential.
